150 kWh a month is a small home with a ref, fan and TV. Here is what that should cost at the current rate, what it is likely made of, and what it would take to cut it.
At the current Meralco all-in residential rate of ₱14.7833 per kWh, 150 kWh a month works out to about ₱2,217, or ₱74 a day. This band qualifies for no lifeline discount.

What 150 kWh is made of
Consumption is easier to understand as hours of appliance use than as an abstract number. Below is what that budget buys, and how much of it a single appliance would take if run on a typical schedule.

The pattern in almost every Filipino household is the same. Aircon dominates, everything else is noise, and the month-to-month swing you see on your bill is nearly always cooling hours rather than anything new plugged in.
Reading the bill itself
The figure above is what 150 kWh should cost at the headline rate. Your actual bill will differ slightly, and the reason is on the bill itself. Divide the total amount by the kWh consumed and you get your real effective rate, which moves with discounts, the senior citizen deduction, and the AWAT refunds Meralco is currently passing back to residential customers.
Four lines are worth finding. Generation is the biggest and the one that swings monthly. Transmission goes to the grid operator. Distribution is Meralco own share, unchanged since August 2022. Everything below that is taxes, universal charges and subsidies remitted to government. If the total jumped and generation did not, the cause is your consumption, not the rate.
Checking whether the reading is right
150 kWh a month is 5.0 kWh a day. Before assuming a meter fault, work out whether that matches your household. Aircon is the deciding factor in almost every case: a single 1HP unit running eight hours a night uses about 216 kWh a month by itself, which is more than most households consume in total without one.
If the number genuinely does not match, read the meter yourself on the same date two months running and compare the difference against the billed consumption. A discrepancy there is worth raising. A bill that simply rose in April or May usually is not, because Meralco reports residential demand climbing 20 to 33 percent through the dry season on cooling alone.
What this consumption costs over a year
At ₱2,217 a month, 150 kWh works out to about ₱26,610 a year at today rate. That is the number worth holding in mind when weighing an appliance upgrade or a solar quote, because monthly figures make large sums look small.
The rate itself is not stable. Meralco moved from ₱12.95 in January to ₱14.78 now, roughly 14 percent inside eight months, and about 70 percent across five years. Any calculation you do on this year rate is a floor rather than a forecast.
The lifeline and senior discounts
Households consuming 50 kWh or less receive a full discount under the national lifeline threshold. Between 51 and 70 kWh the discount is 35 percent, and 71 to 100 kWh receives 20 percent. These are applied automatically from meter history with no application needed, so if you sit near a threshold, the difference between 100 and 105 kWh is larger than five kilowatt-hours of electricity.
Senior citizen discounts apply separately under Republic Act 9994 and cover a share of the generation, transmission, system loss, distribution, supply and metering charges for qualified households.
Where the money on the bill goes
Of that ₱2,217, roughly 55 to 64 percent is the generation charge, which Meralco buys from suppliers and passes through without markup. Transmission goes to the grid operator. Distribution is Meralco own share and has not moved since August 2022. The rest is taxes, universal charges and subsidies remitted to government.
That structure is why bills rise even when Meralco changes nothing. Generation is repriced every month against fuel prices, the peso-dollar rate and the wholesale spot market.
Cutting a ₱2,217 bill
- Raise the aircon setting. 25 or 26 degrees instead of 18 cuts compressor minutes sharply, and the room does not cool faster at a lower setting.
- Use a timer at night. The hours after you fall asleep are the easiest to remove.
- Add an electric fan. A few centavos an hour lets most people sit comfortably two degrees warmer.
- Clean aircon filters monthly. Restricted airflow stretches every cooling cycle.
- Check for a non-inverter unit. On long nightly runs, an inverter aircon of the same horsepower uses substantially less.
What solar would do to this bill
Offsetting 150 kWh entirely would take roughly a 1.3 kW array, costing about ₱58,594 to ₱97,656 installed at 2026 prices.
In practice a grid-tied system offsets 40 to 80 percent of a bill rather than all of it, because it produces nothing at night and net metering credits exports at around ₱6.50 per kWh rather than the full retail rate. Size to your daytime load and the arithmetic improves.
