How Many Solar Panels to Run Your Appliances in the Philippines

The question most Filipino households actually ask is not how many kilowatts they need. It is whether solar can run the aircon. This section answers that appliance by appliance, using Philippine sun hours and Philippine panel prices.

The Philippines averages about 4.8 peak sun hours a day, well above Europe or the northern United States. A single 550 W panel produces roughly 2.1 kWh a day after losses. Divide an appliance daily consumption by that and you have your panel count.

Why aircon changes everything

Scroll the aircon rows and the pattern is obvious. A 1.5HP non-inverter unit running eight hours needs more panels than the entire rest of a typical household combined. Any conversation about running a Filipino home on solar is really a conversation about the aircon.

Two things make that easier than it looks. Cooling load peaks in the afternoon, which is exactly when panels produce most, so a grid-tied array covers daytime cooling directly with no battery. And an inverter-type unit draws far less than a non-inverter of the same horsepower once the room is cool, which cuts the array you need substantially.

Panels alone will not run it at night

Solar produces in daylight. Aircon runs at night. That mismatch is the entire reason batteries appear on Philippine solar quotes, and batteries remain the expensive component at roughly ₱60,000 to ₱150,000 depending on capacity.

Net metering does not solve it either. Exports credit near the generation rate, around ₱6.50 per kWh rather than the ₱14.7833 retail rate, so daytime surplus sent to the grid buys back less than half the night-time electricity it pays for.
