Dryers are billed by the load, not by the hour, and that is the right way to think about them. Nobody runs a dryer for six hours. They run it for 45 minutes, four times a week, and the question is what those loads add up to over a year.
A standard electric clothes dryer draws about 3,000 W and takes 45 minutes to an hour per load, so a typical load costs $0.55 at 18.44ยข per kWh. At the US average of about 300 loads a year, that is roughly 165 dollars annually. Larger 240 V units rated at 5,000 W push a single load closer to $0.92.

Why the dryer is a 240 volt appliance
Almost every full-size electric dryer in North America runs on a 240 V circuit with a 30 A breaker. The heating element is the load; the drum motor is a rounding error at around 200 W. That is why a dryer sits alongside the water heater and the EV charger in the small group of appliances that genuinely move your bill.
Gas dryers use the same motor and a gas burner instead of the element, so they draw only 200 to 400 W of electricity. If you have a gas dryer, your electric cost per load is a few cents and your real cost is on the gas bill.

Cycle length is set by your washer, not your dryer
Cycle length is the variable, and it is mostly decided by how wet the clothes are when they go in. A washer that spins at 1,200 rpm leaves substantially less water in the load than one spinning at 800, and the dryer has to evaporate every gram of the difference. Upgrading spin speed is one of the few ways to cut drying cost without touching the dryer.
Load size matters in both directions. Half loads waste a heated drum; overstuffed loads tumble badly and run long. Sorting by fabric weight helps more than most people expect, because a single pair of jeans will keep an entire load of shirts running an extra 20 minutes.

Six things that shorten the cycle
- Use the moisture sensor cycle, not timed drying. Timed dry keeps heating after the clothes are dry. Auto-sensing stops when they are. On most machines this is the single biggest saving available.
- Clean the lint filter every load and the vent duct every year. Restricted airflow lengthens every cycle and is also the main cause of dryer fires.
- Run consecutive loads. A drum that is already hot does not have to be heated again.
- Spin twice for towels and jeans. Thirty seconds more in the washer removes water the dryer would spend ten minutes evaporating.
- Consider a heat pump dryer if you are replacing anyway. They use roughly half to a third of the electricity of a resistance dryer, run on a normal 120 V outlet, and take longer per load. The trade is time for money.
- Line dry the easy things. Sheets and towels dry outdoors for nothing and the marginal effort is low.
