A 2 kW system suits a small home with one aircon used at night. Here is what it costs installed, what it actually produces in Philippine sun, and how long it takes to pay for itself against a Meralco bill.
A 2 kW grid-tied solar system in the Philippines costs about ₱90,000 to ₱150,000 fully installed. It produces roughly 7.7 kWh a day, or 230 kWh a month, worth about ₱3,406 against the current Meralco rate of ₱14.7833 per kWh. Payback lands between 2.2 and 3.7 years.

Where the production figure comes from
The Philippines averages about 4.8 peak sun hours a day. A 2 kW array at 4.8 hours would produce 9.6 kWh on paper, but heat, dust, wiring and inverter conversion take roughly 20 percent, leaving 7.7 kWh. Tropical heat is the biggest of those losses, which is why Philippine arrays underperform their nameplate more than European ones do.
Output also swings by season. Expect noticeably more in the dry months and less through the habagat, so the monthly figure is an annual average rather than what you will see in August.
Whether the payback figure is honest
The payback range above assumes you use every kilowatt-hour the system produces. Most households do not. Net metering credits exports at roughly ₱6.50 per kWh, well under the ₱14.7833 retail rate, so any surplus you export is worth less than half what you save by consuming it.
If your household is empty during the day, a realistic payback is longer than the figure above, and a smaller system sized to your daytime baseload is usually the better buy. If someone is home running aircon through the afternoon, the figure is close to accurate.
What a legitimate quote includes
A turnkey price for a 2 kW system should cover Tier-1 panels, the inverter, aluminium mounting rails, DC and AC breakers, all wiring, labour, the LGU electrical permit, and the net metering application with Meralco. Ask for the bill of materials in writing. A quote materially below ₱90,000 is almost always missing something from that list, most often permits or the net metering paperwork, which you then pay for separately or go without.
Two other things worth confirming before signing. Whether the installer is DOE-accredited, because Meralco interconnection goes more smoothly when they are. And what the warranty actually covers: panels usually carry 25 years on output but inverters carry five to ten, and the inverter is the component most likely to fail first.
On-grid or hybrid for a 2 kW system
An on-grid system is cheaper, simpler, and shuts down during a brownout. That last point surprises people. Grid-tied inverters are required to disconnect when the grid goes down, so a system with no battery gives you nothing during an outage, even at noon with full sun.
A hybrid system adds a battery and keeps selected circuits alive. It costs roughly ₱60,000 to ₱150,000 more depending on capacity, and it lengthens payback because the battery buys reliability rather than savings. In areas with frequent brownouts that trade is usually worth making. In Metro Manila, where outages are less common, most households are better served putting the money into more panels.
Net metering, and why it pays less than you think
Under RA 9513 you can export surplus to Meralco and receive a credit. The credit is set near the generation charge, currently around ₱6.50 per kWh, not the full retail rate of ₱14.7833. So a kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth more than twice a kilowatt-hour you export.
For a 2 kW system producing 230 kWh a month, that distinction decides whether the payback figure above holds. A household with someone home running aircon through the afternoon consumes most of its own production and hits the shorter payback. An empty house exports the surplus at half value and takes considerably longer.
Paying for it
Few households pay ₱90,000 upfront. The routes people actually use are the SSS Energy Sustainability Loan for qualified members, a Pag-IBIG multi-purpose or home improvement loan, an in-house installment plan from the installer, or a bank personal loan. Installer plans are the fastest and usually the most expensive once you read the effective rate.
The arithmetic that matters is simple: if the monthly amortisation is below the ₱3,406 the system saves, the system pays for itself from day one. If it is above, you are funding the gap until the loan clears. Work that out before comparing anything else.
Mistakes that cost money
- Sizing to the total bill instead of daytime use. The single most common error, and it buys panels whose output gets exported at half value.
- Ignoring shade. One shaded panel in a string can drag down the whole string. Check the roof at 9am and 3pm, not just at noon.
- Taking one quote. The spread between installers on identical equipment is routinely 30 percent.
- Skipping the net metering application. Without it, exported power is simply given away.
- Buying panels retail and hiring labour separately. It looks cheaper and usually is not once permits, mounting and interconnection are counted.
